Background

The property now known as Falfield Village Hall was originally built in the 1860's to accommodate the village school and schoolmaster’s house. It was in use from the 1860's until the 1920's when the school closed.  The main part of the school was then used for social events connected with the church.  A hall, which remained in use until the 1950's and was constructed from corrugated tin, had been erected alongside the A38 at Mount Pleasant in the early 1900's for general use by the village.

From the late 1940's until the 1980's the smaller part of what is now the village hall (that part which had originally been the schoolmaster’s house) was in use as a private school known as St Martha’s and run by Mrs O.E Truss (Miss Tayler), the large hall being used for social events and activities connected with the church.

In 1985 the Village Hall which was in the ownership of The Diocese of Gloucester and was known as ‘The Schoolroom’.  It was mainly used by St George’s Church for social activities. In 1985 the Hall was passed to the Diocesan Trust who leased it to Falfield Parish Council for a term of 52 years with a peppercorn rent of £10 per year. The Churchwardens and Vicar were also made Managing Trustees.

From a public meeting called by the Parish Council a Management Committee was formed. The Management Committee is made up of representatives from local village organisations which use the hall and a number of private individuals who are either elected or co-opted at the Annual General Meeting which is normally held in April.

The role of the Management Committee is to operate the hall on behalf of the Parish Council ensuring that hall is kept in good repair both inside and out. In recent years due to a reduction in the use of the Hall the Management Committee’s role had changed from solely managing the hall but to also to undertake fund rising in order for the hall to continue to remain viable.

Based on the terms of the lease the hall is due to be handed back to the Diocesan Trust in 2037.
